Who's got soul?

Couple of weeks ago I met this guy Kam who just happens to be an RnB vocalist and in need of a photographer for his album. Happy to help another LA artist and to make some quick cheese, I took him across the Los Angeles bridge into the train yards. Where we almost got arrested for trespassing. The pig explained "that with elections so close, mass transit is a possible target for terrorist attacks" and us being there makes us suspects. Explaining to Mr. Pig that we weren't there to cause any trouble he let us off with a warning and we went back to work. Oink Oink!

KAMPAIGN. A soulful singer with a smooth, intoxicating style. A native Californian, Kam credits his “Old School” influences to the first five years of his life on the road with his singer Mom. Pop and R&B icons Marvin, Stevie, Smokey, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jazz greats, Al Jarreau, Bobby Mcferrin, and contemporaries, Redman, KRS-ONE, The Roots, and LL Cool J, round out his musical mentors. He is featured on Underground artist Scarub’s “ New Per-spek’ tiv” and Mista RuL.A. ‘The Street Hustle”. Kam is the creator of his homegrown trademark “Vocalmentals”. Vocalmentals is a acapella harmony blend that is a thorough mix of R&B, Hip Hop and Jazz.

KAMPAIGN fronts for live stage shows opening up for majors tours. He even threw his hat into the Stand up ring, and loves to do improv comedy. “I Keep it real by remembering my roots, and my source. I try to be available whenever my friends at the NAACP, or my church call for me to sing. This helps me keep my feet on solid ground”.

You can find Kam in LA every thursday nights emceeing the Open Mic Session at Club Dusk Til Dawn (6819 Pico Blvd) or sample his music on MYSPACE.COM/THEKAMPAIGN

I <3 ART!

I heard The Hundreds had this Lochness Monster drawing contest on the roof top and I definitely couldn't pass on the opportunity.

Vito
brought his old friend Krylon who I haven't seen in a long time.

TEAMWORK!

Nessie looks mean!

BOBBY HUNDREDS hooking up the 3-D effects!

Tadpoles!

Nessie looked a little to phallic so Bobby pixelated the picture so you wouldn't confuse it with a giant penis breaking through a wall.

Vasquez Rocks

I'm sure you've seen these rock formations used as backdrops for various movies such as the Flintstones, Star Trek, Austin Powers and Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure. I pass by it all the time on my way to Mountain High off the 14 freeway.

Vasquez Rocks is a 745 acre Los Angeles County Park, located in Agua Dulce midway between Santa Clarita and Palmdale. Vasquez Rocks is named after a bandit who hid out in the numerous caves and caverns found in the park and surrounding vicinity. The rocks exposed here mark an important event in the geologic history of Southern California.

The Vasquez Rocks are formations sculpted by 8 to 15 million years of earthquake activity along the Elkhorn fault, an offshoot of the San Andreas Fault. Compressed, folded and tilted as much as 50 degrees, and up to nearly 150 feet high, erosion gradually stripped away soil from around the rocks leaving these ancient and spectacular creations. Course-grained yellowish-gray sandstone beds several feet thick make up these strange jutting and sweeping formations. Shale, basalt, and reddish-brown conglomerate can be found layered between the sandstone slabs.

I would've gotten more pictures but people were filming a movie. Ah well... next time. - peace

A Bird's Eye View

I was in Los Feliz for lunch and decided to cruise up to the newly renovated Griffith Park Observatory since it was up the street.

When I was kid, I used to come here all the time with the family.

You can get a bird's eye view and see all of Los Angeles from the observation deck.

See that thick hazy layer of smoke covering the city, those aren't clouds, thats smog!

Los Angeles can continue being the butt of smog jokes now that it has once again topped the American Lung Association's bad air list of most polluted cities in America. The association found that the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which includes Riverside County, had the worst air based on 2003 through 2005 figures. Overall, 26 counties in California failed the clean air test.

Particulate matter also known as particle pollution or PM, is a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles. The size of particles is directly linked to their potential for causing health problems. EPA is concerned about particles that are 10 micrometers in diameter or smaller because those are the particles that generally pass through the throat and nose and enter the lungs. Once inhaled, these particles can affect the heart and lungs and cause serious health effects. EPA groups particle pollution into two categories:

Inhalable coarse particles such as those found near roadways and dusty industries, are larger than 2.5 micrometers and smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter.

Fine particles such as those found in smoke and haze, are 2.5 micrometers in diameter and smaller. These particles can be directly emitted from sources such as forest fires, or they can form when gases emitted from power plants, industries and automobiles react in the air.

Health Effects

Particle pollution - especially fine particles - contains microscopic solids or liquid droplets that are so small that they can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems. Numerous scientific studies have linked particle pollution exposure to a variety of problems, including:

increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing, or difficulty breathing, for example;
decreased lung function
aggravated asthma
development of chronic bronchitis
irregular heartbeat
nonfatal heart attacks and
premature death in people with heart or lung disease.

You could barely see the Hollywood sign with all this air pollution. Nasty!

The 5 biggest contributors of these harmful emissions in southern california are Oil companies such as Chevron, ARCO, Union Oil, Ultramar INC and Texaco. I ain't trying to scare you just letting you know about the shit you breathe in everyday.

PEACE YALL!

A LIVING LEGEND

WEDNESDAY NIGHT @ TURNTABLE LAB L.A.

Turntable Lab 424 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90057

I love this place! Free drinks and a free show...WORDUP!!

Every now and then The Lab showcases some of the world's greatest musicians and tonight they got Q-TIP of A Tribe Called Quest. A Living Legend that pioneered the Hip Hop movement from New York to L.A. and around the world. He came by the Lab to promote his latest solo album The Renaissance, which drops November 4th.

Q-Tip (born Jonathan Davis, April 10, 1970, in Harlem, New York), is an American hip-hop emcee, singer, actor, and hip hop producer, who went to Murry Bergtraum High School in Manhattan, New York and was the leader of the critically acclaimed group A Tribe Called Quest. He converted to Islam in the mid-1990s, and changed his name to Kamaal Ibn John Fareed. The Q in Q-Tip's stage name stands for Queens, the borough of New York City from which he hails.

A Tribe Called Quest is one of Hip Hops most legendary, beloved and revered groups of all time and for good reason. Easily recognized for their unique approach to rap music by employing jazz infused soundscapes to Afro centric rhymes, sans the jaded and often nihilistic aggressive posturing associated with hip-hop, A Tribe Called Quest was largely responsible for the popularity of a new genre that dominated the East Coast sound of the early 1990s.

Queens, New York natives Q-Tip , Phife Dawg , and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of Brooklyn, formed ATCQ in 1985. Jarobi, the honorary member of ATCQ, though not always heard, was a fixture of the group in heart and in friendship. QUEST, the original name of the group, was later given the prefix A Tribe Called by their high school buddies, The Jungle Brothers, while recording Black Is Black for their album Straight Out The Jungle. ATCQ, along with the Jungle Brothers and De La Soul, formed a unit called The Native Tongues. With a building buzz around The Native Tongues and Tribes energetic live performances, ATCQ landed a major recording contract with Jive Records in 1989.

Sonically, ATCQ was a decisive and welcomed tangent of jazz, bass-heavy rhythmic vibes and eclectic sampling when compared to the mundane recycling of soul loops, breaks and vocals of their contemporaries. Lyrically, emcees Q-Tip and Phife Dawg addressed social issues relevant to young blacks such as use of the n word and its relevance, date rape and other interpersonal relationships, industry politics and consumerism with infectious energy and fun and having a good time while still promoting positivity.

ATCQ composed a number of successful singles and albums with their creative approach to rap music. In 1990, the group released Peoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, scoring several memorable songs including Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It and I Left my Wallet in El Segundo. It was their sophomore effort, The Low End Theory, considered one of the greatest follow-ups in hip-hop history, that would solidify them as legends.

Released in late 1991, the freedom expressed in the creation and feel of this record - along with its successor Midnight Marauders - influenced many future artists and producers such as Common, The Roots, Jill Scott, Kanye West and The Neptunes. These artists are a part of ATCQs legacy and are evidence of ATCQs impact for years to come. Classics like Award Tour, Electric Relaxation, Check The Rhyme and Scenario defined ATCQs sound during this period.

A Tribe Called Quests anomalous posture has changed the face and sound of hip-hop and paved the way for future groups, artists, producers and even fans to be unapologetic about their creative expression. With or without future recordings, ATCQs legacy lives on in the groups creative innovation that is recognized as a profound contribution to musical history.

Comic Book Guy

While I was in San Diego I stopped by Chula Vista to visit a very good friend of my mine, Ali Rios. We met in high school and have been friends ever since. He's your typical mexican ex-marine filipino-washed comic book know-it-all. While I was interviewing him he laid out his entire Generation 1 Transformers collection. FUCKIN COOL! He even has Soundwave and Devastator! TOO AWESOME!

ADIII: Where are you originally from?

Ali: I'm originally from Los Angeles... the San Fernando Valley to be exact.

ADIII: 818 REPRESENT!

ADIII: So you've been training for the past month to take over management of Comic Odyssey, San Diego, can you explain the feeling of pursuing this career? And what are your family and friends think of this?

Ali: I feel very blessed and very fortunate to see one of my life's dreams realized. I hope to use what i learn here and become franchise into THE nation's number one retail shop...going global is the idea. My partner and I won't settle for less. Of course as with any venture there are risks involved, and sacrifice inherent to the siutation, but my friends and family are supportive. They understand my passion for the art form and have known me long enough to know that i have a knack for business...they are with me all the way. It helps!

ADIII: How long have you've been into comics?

Ali: I've been into comics since I was a kid...i was always reading and drawing, so when i dicovered Batman comics at the age of 9, I loved the union of words and art and fell in love with the skill of sequential storytelling. By the age of 11 I was a full-blown Marvel zombie after spending all of my allowance money on the trading cards, action figures, and of course, the books themselves. Todd McFarlane was launching Spider-Man, Erik Larsen was doing Amazing Jim Lee was doing Uncanny then the NEW X-Men and Leifeld was doing X-Force. It was a magical time, as a fan i was spoiled! All I did all day was doodle, read about, and play with these imaginary people...they were real to me. These characters taught me, they inspired me, they were modern mythological beings to me and I felt fortunate just to be able to peek in their world.

ADIII: DC or Marvel?

Ali: Marvel...all the way...forever!

ADIII: What's your favorite comic book title?

Ali: My favorite title right now is the New Avengers and the Mighty Avengers. OK that's two books but they compliment each other so I'll count them as one!

ADIII: If you were a comic book character what would your name be?

Ali: My comic book character name would be The Astonishing Absorbing Anomaly!!! The idea being that I absorb what I read.

ADIII: HUH?! HAHA!

ADIII: If you were bitten by a radioactive insect what kind of powers would you have?

Ali: I guess it would depend on the critter itself. I say it's an ant, in which case I'd be able to lift ten times my own weight and I'd be able to climb any surface and burrow the earth with amazing speed. A cross between Ant and Spider-Man!

ADIII: Out of all the comic book hotties who would you nail, hypothetically speaking?

Ali: Hahahahahahaha! Well, hypothetically speaking since I AM a happily married man ...this one's tough! I'd like to say I'd go for a nice gal like Power Girl or Wonder Woman, but the truth is I would totally go for a snooty evil girl like Emma Frost the White Queen or Madame Hydra with her green hair, or a crazy chick like the Scarlett Witch, I love that outfit! And Catwoman with her anti-hero hotness and that black pleather jumpsuit...ditto for the Black Widow ... and definitely Carol Danvers (Ms Marvel)...she's plenty feisty herself! And Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew. And Sue Storm. And Mystique. And i wouldn't say Psylocke cause I'm already married to her sans the psychic powers!

ADIII: GEEEZ! AHAHAHA! I wonder if your wife is gonna be reading this!

ADIII: Seeing that comic books are being turned into movies nowadays. What's your favorite comic book - movie adaptation?

Ali: Has to be SIN CITY. There are better comic book movies (THE DARK KNIGHT, X2) but SIN CITY is an actual comic-book actually brought to life, panel by panel, frame by frame, so that makes it the best adaptation. Until WATCHMEN comes out, Zack Snyder is NOT gonna let me down!

ADIII: What are your plans for the future?

Ali: I don't know exactly what the future holds for me or the industry but I want to be THE NAME amongst names as it relates to comic books and the business. I want to see more appreciation and recognition to the art form (video games have their own televised awards, why can't we? Hollywood sees the potential in our stories, why don't more readers?), and I want the writers and artists to continue to push the creative boundaries that have re-invigorated the genre in recent years. I want it all to continue, and I want to do nothing but to talk to my cx's and share with them the passion of my life.

ADIII: Thank You! HAHAHA!

Ali: Thank you for your time, sir, it was a pleasure!

If you got any questions about comics, cards, vinyl figures, toys, movies, art, cartoons, pick up lines, anything comic book related, feel free to contact Ali Rios or Gerry Sansolis at
